What is Dolby Atmos Music ?

While the advent of streaming music services has revolutionized the way people get their music, not much has changed in the way songs are made. Whether you listen to music via terrestrial FM, digital satellite, MP3, CD, DVD-Audio, or through lossless high-resolution files such as FLAC or DSD, the original recording may have been in stereo, and this familiar two-channel mix Sound has been with us for decades.

That may soon change: Dolby Atmos Music, which emits stereo sound like a mono AM radio, is slowly making its way into the mainstream. You probably already know about Dolby Atmos movies and TV shows - if not, we have a great explanation and detailed guide - but Dolby Atmos Music is its own beast. It's a whole new way to record and listen to music, and Atmos music could be a big part of the next big leap forward in recorded music. Here's everything you need to know.

What is Dolby Atmos Music?

Dolby Atmos music is music recorded and produced using Dolby's Atmos 3D audio format. That's what we're talking about, but Dolby prefers "immersive" to "3D," and he describes Atmos as an "experience" rather than a format. Semantics aside, Atmos music differs from traditional stereo music in several key ways.

Modern music producers have access to some very sophisticated digital recording equipment that allows them to mix music from dozens of different channels (also called tracks). However, no matter how many channels there are to begin with, if a stereo recording is to be created, these multiple channels must eventually be combined into two channels: a left channel and a right channel, which correspond to stereo Two speakers in the environment. Dolby Atmos Music, on the other hand, is a native surround sound technology that supports up to 128 channels and up to 34 individual speakers in a home theater, including Sound speakers.

It sounds like the kind of thing you'd hear in a commercial movie theater, and it is - Dolby Atmos is used to create a highly immersive soundtrack for a movie, and the sound feels like it's coming from in front of you, behind you, to the sides and above. But the same recording technique can be used for music, to a similar result: total immersion in the music.

It's easy to think of Dolby Atmos Music as an easy way to play a normal soundtrack through a surround sound setup. After all, every home theater receiver can take an audio source like a vinyl record, CD, or streaming media and optimize it with circuitry and software to make it a surround sound system, like a 7.1 speaker setup. But Atmos music isn't a stereo conversion to multichannel surround sound, it's a scratch recording that uses those extra channels in a whole new way.

One of the defining features of Dolby Atmos movies and Dolby Atmos music is that an object (or in the case of music, an instrument or soundtrack) can be independently manipulated by the producer in 3D space. For example, when listening to atmospheric music on an Atmos-compatible sound system, you might hear the violins in the room starting from the front of the symphony, but as the music continues over time, these instruments can gradually shift in space to feel like they're coming from all around you . It's an unprecedented level of control for a filmmaker, and like 3D effects in movies, it can feel jarring, even cheesy, if done in a clumsy way. But equally, it can feel sublime when spatial choices are manipulated by skilled and experienced people.

How can I listen to Dolby Atmos music?

Starting December 2019, you can stream select songs and albums in Dolby Atmos on Amazon Music HD and Tidal High-Fidelity. But here's the problem. Right now, the only way to play those songs on Amazon Music HD is to buy Amazon's new Echo Studio, a high-end version of Amazon's famous voice-activated smart speaker that features 3D immersive sound. The Echo Studio costs $199. If you want to listen to Atmos on Tidal HiFi, you'll need an Android smartphone or tablet that's compatible with Dolby Environment. Recent iPhones, while compatible with Atmosphere, are not yet supported.

Any other combination of devices or streaming services -- even if that device supports Dolby Atmos via Netflix, YouTube, or another service -- won't get Dolby Atmos music versions of these tracks.

An exception to this is live concert videos recorded in Dolby Atmos. For example, Taylor Swift's Reputation Stadium Tour on Netflix was recorded in Dolby Atmos. An Atmos-recorded live performance is slightly different than a studio-recorded Atmos. Live performances benefit from Atmos, providing a more authentic concert experience, enhancing the feeling of being "out there".

Currently, there is no way to buy Atmos music in digital format online. Even online stores that cater to hi-res music lovers don't sell Atmos music tracks -- though we found one exception: AcousticSounds.com, which sells a Dolby Atmos track in . mp4.

However, there is another way to get Dolby Atmos music. Blu-ray discs can be used to play Atmos music, and several albums have been released in this format. Beatles fans will be happy to know that Abbey Road happens to be one of them. Unfortunately, Blu-ray Disc selection is still pretty narrow, and it's unlikely to be how most people listen to Atmos music in the future.

If you have a Blu-ray Disc player and a Dolby Atmos receiver or speakers, you're good to go.

What about Atmos music on headphones and mobile devices?

The headphones (with some notable exceptions like the Razer Tiamat V2) are effectively 2-channel stereo speakers. However, the fact that each ear can only hear one of these channels at a time means that a technique called binaural audio can be used to simulate 360-degree sound (our brains are very easy to fool). Dolby Atmos makes the most of binaural audio and is very headphone-friendly. In fact, Dolby Headphones has been used extensively by Atmos in the Windows 10 and Xbox gaming worlds to give players a more immersive audio experience that helps them characterize, as well as actions like explosions and gunshots, context so they can Faster response and greater accuracy.

The same binaural effect makes Atmos headphones equally effective for gaming and music, and we discussed the difference between Atmos for movies and Atmos for music earlier.

The challenge, though, is connecting the headphones to an Atmos-enabled device that can play Atmos music.

Many smartphones support Dolby OS, including recent iPhones running iOS 13 or later. You can find tons of samples of Dolby Atmos music on sites like YouTube, but finding dedicated Atmos music is very difficult.

Unfortunately, plugging a set of earphones into the Atmos a/V receiver's headphone output usually won't work, even if it's connected to a Blu-ray player. Most Atmos A/V receivers can only handle the Atmos signal through the connected speakers, and can only provide a degraded stereo mix for the headphone jack.

What music is in Dolby Atmos Music?

Dolby currently works with two major music companies: Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. Both labels have said they will release new and classic recordings in the Atmos music format. The exact number of Atmos music tracks hasn't been publicly shared by either player, though previous promises were in the thousands.

Warner hasn't yet provided a list of artists to choose from, but Universal says its Atmos music contributions will include Bastille, The Beatles, Billy Ehrlich, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Pavarotti, Marvin Gaye and The Weeknd, among others.

Are there other ways to experience Dolby Atmos music?

Some clubs are starting to install Dolby Atmos music systems, enabling performing DJs to control their music in a 3D space around the club. These include London's Acoustics, Chicago's Sound Bar and San Francisco's Serenity.

Does Dolby Atmos Music Have a Competitor?

Atmos Music's biggest competitor is Sony. Its new 360 Reality Audio technology gave our employees chills when it was shown off at CES 2019, and it's also an immersive, object-based audio format for speakers and headphones. The song debuted on the Deezer music service in October 2019, and was added to Tidal shortly thereafter. Sony plans to offer the format on Amazon Music HD and Nuggets in the future.

As a newcomer in this field, there is still a long way to go before it can catch up to Dolby Atmos in terms of recording and playback. But, as the owner of the sprawling Sony BMG music publishing empire, Sony has a huge advantage in advancing its concept of immersive music. The next few years will be key to the success of these competing technologies, and yes, we as consumers may be in for another format war.

In movies and home theater, Dolby's main competitor is DTS, the company behind DTS:X -- an object-based surround sound technology with strong similarities to Dolby Atmos. DTS:X can also be used for music, but there doesn't seem to be much support so far. Most A/V receivers can decode Dolby Atmos as well as DTS:X, but again, you need music recorded using DTS:X to take advantage of it. Unless record labels jump on the DTS:X bandwagon, as Universal and Warner have done with Atmos, the DTS:X music landscape could feel like a desert for a while.
